Recruitment experts from PageGroup shared the overseas talent market prospects, opportunities, and challenges of building talent strategies, as well as first-hand recruitment suggestions.

    Client’s challenges

    Post-pandemic, the domestic market growth has been slow, leading clients to consider overseas expansion plans:

    • Limited understanding of the overseas talent market: Initially tried to expand business in Singapore but found talent costs exceeded the budget, making it challenging to choose the first destination for expansion.
    • As a local enterprise, both management and HR primarily communicate in Chinese: Most headhunting firms' consultants in overseas locations face language barriers, making smooth communication difficult.

    Our approach

    • Target Market Identification: Helped the client pinpoint countries receptive to Chinese businesses and male apparel brands. After two months of analysis, Malaysia was chosen as the first entry point into Southeast Asia, focusing on retail and offline channels.
    • Client-Customised Expertise: Deployed a bilingual senior advisor (Mandarin/English) with expertise in cross-cultural negotiations to support seamless engagement in Malaysia.

    Outcome

    • Successful Placement: Rrecruited two BD managers for the client.
    • High client interview rate: 73%
    • Client Satisfaction: Our end-to-end support in this first expansion phase earned their trust, leading to further job requirements and cementing our role as a strategic partner.

    3. Time Constraints: Ambitious timelines for establishing a presence in Singapore.

    Client’s challenges

    Client tasked us with recruiting a procurement manager in Singapore. The role has high requirements:

    1. The candidate must understand Singapore and the material supply dynamics in countries like Indonesia and Bangladesh
    2. They must be a Singaporean citizen to serve as the company’s legal representative in Singapore
    3. The role reports to teams in China and other countries, with no current staff in Singapore

    Our approach

    1. Conducted one-on-one interviews to introduce the client and position, as the client had limited brand presence in Singapore.
    2. Sourced candidates from top Chinese consumer electronics firms and global companies in Singapore, while providing feedback on local talent and compensation.
    3. Cultural and Regulatory Support: Provided training to help the candidate adapt to the local business environment.
    4. Collaboration: Kept close communication with the client to meet their specific needs.

    Outcome

    1. Target talent pool mapping and sent 9 CVs
    2. High client interview rate: 60%
    3. The candidate integrated seamlessly and assisted in establishing the client's Singapore office.
